Identical object transformations
This was part of a project to transform 7 identical objects in a range of ways:
Additive
Subtractive
Symmetrical
Asymmetrical
Distortion
Abstraction
Fragmentation
Overall, I think the project was a useful observation of how each individual interprets and follows a brief. There were some more conceptual interpretations and a range of literal ideas. I chose pens as my identical objects since they have different components, which could be used in highly contrasting ways so that it was clear to everyone else which pen represented which transformation.
Structurally, I laid the pens close together in a linear sequence as I imagined that if they were situated far apart, as boring everyday objects viewers might lose interest as they go from one to the other, and forget which transformation they have just seen. Spatially, my predominant reason for placing them below and left of centre 'stage' was that black biros to me represent a bland and constrictive office environment. I wanted to place them in a way which could advocate for creativity, perhaps by inspiring the viewer to use the pens to fill the empty space with drawings or words.
